Post Election Comfort
Post Election Comfort
Having talked with many friends and read posts on Face Book and news outlets from women and men who are fearful for their lives because of their religion, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation and even their political beliefs, I am struck by their need for comfort. A need to feel safe and secure. A need to feel relief from the grief, distress and fear that is rampant with millions of people because of the election results.
I’m also struck by how quickly many switched their thinking from positive to negative after Hillary lost the election. How quickly they allowed the “collective fear” of Trump supporters to permeate their thoughts and actions and owned the very thing with which Trump encouraged his supporters – fear.
Fear, an acronym for “false evidence appearing real.” I’m not suggesting Trump’s bullying and propaganda is false evidence, I am suggesting that reacting with fear and resistance to what he promotes is false evidence. Raymond Charles Barker, metaphysical teacher wrote, “It is spiritually essential to keep your vision of the future positive no matter what others say or believe.”
To keep your vision of the future positive no matter what others say or believe requires you to think and live from the higher viewpoints of life. It is your thinking that will determine what your future will be, not the election results or the rampant fear.
Spend a few minutes each day contemplating higher viewpoints of life such as perfect harmony, peace, prosperity, health, etc and let God guide you to conceive great and larger ideas. Be an idealist not a realist and own the Infinite Power and Intelligence of Divine Mind. God created you to live purposefully and freely and will provide your safety, security and comfort.
Take a break from reality and implement the following high ideas that will comfort yourself and others and establish a common bond of love and protection.
Reach out to someone who is distressed and give them love and comfort. Hold them in your arms and tell them how important they are to you, how they have impacted your life and that you love them.
Stop thinking and talking about the election for at least one day. Rest your mind and your emotions from rehashing the outcome and rehearsing what to do next.
Take a Break
Take a break from social media with a walk outside in Mother Nature, bake a cake, fold the laundry, sit in your favorite chair with your eyes closed and count your blessings.
Stay in the Moment
Remind yourself and your friends that you are safe and secure today.
Embrace your spiritual practice and affirm your faith in all that is good.
As your energy shifts from fear and grief to acceptance and peace, your heart will open and comfort will come. You will become more effective and understanding. You will feel comforted and will be able to comfort others.
A prayer that offers comfort to many is the Peace Prayer of St. Francis. This prayer for peace guides our hearts to respond with love and tolerance to challenging circumstances and people. Read and ponder its meaning, then, if you’re bold enough, pray the prayer and be open to the results.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Spirit, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
