What Does Forgiveness have to do with My Heart’s Desires?
That phrase, “Your heart’s desires,” it implies so much! It implies that we know what we desire emotionally, physically and spiritually – that’s no small task. Quite frankly, I had never paid attention to my heart’s desires until I began studying the great metaphysical teacher, Emmet Fox. Fox suggests we will struggle to fulfil our heart’s desire when we are afraid, worried or angry. “This is why,” he says, “all true spiritual leaders are so insistent upon the need for unselfishness in motive, for forgiveness of others, and of ourselves too, and for a general attitude of peace and good will toward all. It is this threefold route to our heart’s desire that gives us, “that sense of true harmony and freedom that will permit the clear unobstructed flowing of the Divine Mind through us.” (quote taken from Emmet Fox, Your Heart’s Desire, 1933)
So what Fox is saying is that my heart’s desires will flow from Divine Mind and I will then be in the realm of Spirit, living a bold life of prosperity, abundance, joy, peace, harmony, light and love! Is that true? I mean, all I have to do is be unselfish, forgiving and have a general attitude of peace and good will toward all and my heart’s desires will unfold?
Well if that’s all I have to do, then I am game. I mean, I can be unselfish and forgiving. I can act peacefully and have good will in my heart for all. Or can I? Can I really be unselfish all day, every day? Can I forgive those hurts that border on murder and character assassination? Can I forgive the woman who committed adultery with my first husband? Can I forgive the woman my father married after my mother died, who stole his 5 children’s inheritance? Can I forgive the wretch I most recently worked with who attempted to steal my identity? Can I forgive the man who lied about his love for me and the promise to marry, only to be caught in the act of pleasure with another woman?
And supposing I can muster up a general attitude of peace and good will for these mean-spirited folks, does that mean voila! – My heart’s desires will magically appear? According to Fox, that is what is required: unselfish motives, forgiveness, peace and good will towards all.
If that is true, then I need more than just the promise – I need solid proof. I am human and selfish. I am unforgiving and, though I proclaim peace and good will to all, I want those who have erred to be punished.
You can see my dilemma – I want to know my heart’s desires and I want to know that people who have hurt me will be punished. How can these two attitudes meet in the middle of spiritual laws? According to Fox they cannot. So I have to choose, would I rather be happy, forgiving and kind and realize my heart’s desires? Or would I rather know that those who have treated me badly are punished.
Today, I would rather know my heart’s desires. I pray for God to remove my unselfish and dishonest motives, I pray for kind thoughts and forgiveness for those humans who hurt me, and for peace and feelings of good will for all. Today, I don’t have to know if or how those folks who were unkind and hurtful are punished; that is not my business. Fox says that my heart’s desire comes from Spirit and that Spirit will provide all I require for my heart’s desire.
It was my heart’s desire to write and publish a book for at least ten years. In 2003, I finally began to write but didn’t have the discipline or the full-on desire to write every day. It wasn’t until August 2010 that I wanted to write with purpose, inspiration, direction and yes – desire. But I was blocked, I couldn’t write. My writing was stymied with past resentments I had with an old writing teacher of mine. Knowing that if I practiced Fox’s formula and forgave the teacher and had thoughts of good will for her the writing block would leave, I called her. We talked about my resentments and I was able to let go of my anger. I even shared with her my desire to write and she gave me several techniques to begin the writing.
What a great lesson of practicing Fox’s principles. Following this conversation, everything I needed came so easily to me: time, creative ideas, inspiration, direction and even offers of assistance with the book’s publishing.
When I began researching who would publish my book, I wrote down my desire for a woman publisher who published books by and for women. I struggled, for a frustratingly long time I was unsuccessful with finding the publisher of my choice so again, I began practicing Fox’s formula: unselfish motives, kindness and a general attitude of peace and good will for all.
Then, completely out of the blue, a friend called me from Miami and said, “Your publisher is sitting in front of me at a book fair. Here, talk with her.” Joanna Francis (Kora Press) and I began to chat and she agreed to publish The Age of Sage, Extraordinary Advice for Extraordinary Women as well as my Prosperity Womantra booklet – another living proof and a magical experience of the “unobstructed flow of Divine Mind.” Our heart’s desires come sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, but they will materialize when we spiritually unblock whatever or whoever is causing the delay.
So what are your heart’s desires? Not sure? Well, grab a piece of paper and write down whatever comes to mind and watch what happens in your mind and body. What comes up for you? Action ideas or excuses for these desires not being fulfilled? How many of these excuses involve a selfish thought, a justified anger towards someone or that “get them first before they get you” mentality? Practice Fox’s formula for realizing your heart’s desires and then take the initial action toward the heart’s desire and watch the Universal Intelligence assist!
